The Jeff Cooper 200 Meter Zeroing Target
Currently UNAVAILABLE
Too many shooters zero their rifles (for that matter, all their firearms) at too short a distance and thus loose the advantages of a more useful trajectory.
If you zero for too close a range you make hitting at greater distances much more difficult. While you may say, "but I'll never shoot anything at a greater distance" one never knows when that trophy buck or a target of opportunity may show up way over there. Since, with a proper zero one doesn't have to really worry about hold over (or under) until the ranges approach 300 yards away, why not take advantage of what you have, even if all you do is hunt in the thick brush of New England.
If you know the trajectory data for your load you can achieve a zero by adjusting your point of impact at 100 yards to give you the best working range. (For most loads about 2" to 3" high at 100 yards works well.) However, after doing this you should verify things at a longer range. The problem with this is that regular targets are difficult to use past 100 yard as they don't have a visible and easily defined aiming point.
The Jeff Cooper zeroing target is designed to provide a distinct aim point and cross hair reference at 200 yards/meters. Because of its aiming point design it also works well at 100 yards.
These are printed on VERY heavy paper with a 1" grid and Jeff's own design in the center. There is room for weather and load data at the bottom of the target. Jeff was very very specific when it came to color and size, because if the target background is too white it visually bleaches out the dark areas, same with too dark--it will mask the center aiming square. Many folks have copied this target as of late, but this is original.
"The clean design of the Cooper Target helps to make sighting in less a chore and more something to look forward to. I use them exclusively in my rifle tests for magazine articles and recommend them without reserve." -- Roy Huntington
"Jeff Cooper recommends sighting in rifles not at the traditional 100 yards but at twice that distance, and the target he designed for that purpose provides a bold and clear reference for the cross hairs even at 200 yards. The regular scope sighting targets are inadequate at that distance at normal hunting magnifications." -- Eric Ching
